6 Apps for Content Creators to Earn Bitcoin

6 Apps for Content Creators to Earn Bitcoin

The internet has revolutionised the way we communicate, share information and interact with each other.

It has uplifted those living in authoritarian regimes, overthrown dictatorships, given rise to multi-billion dollar companies and above all, democratised mass communication.

However, one area that has remained largely primitive is how content is valued on it and monetised.

Internet’s Monetisation Problem

We value content based on the number of views, likes, shares and follows. All of these require little effort from those that are performing these actions, opening them up to manipulation and reducing their reliability for attesting value to a particular piece of content.

Traditional models of content monetisation, such as advertising and subscription fees, have dominated the internet for decades now. But these models have proven to give rise to incidents that go against the spirit of the open internet. Monetisation on the internet is rampant with censorship, debanking, misinformation, deplatforming and numerous regulatory hurdles.

This has left content creators with an internet that doesn’t fairly compensate them for their work. We have created a list of platforms that make it easy for content creators to earn Bitcoin and effectively monetise their content. You can use this list to as a starting point to get started.

1. Wavlake - Earn Bitcoin by producing high-quality music

Wavlake - Blog By Bringin
Website: https://www.wavlake.com/ Wavlake is an music streaming platform on which musicians can earn sats directly from their listeners. The page of each track will have the number of sats zapped to it along with the number of people who have zapped as well. Wavlake calls zapping as ‘boosting’. They recently introduced a feature that gives musicians the ability to split their earning with collaborators. You can either sign up and log in with your socials, email or alternatively, you can log in using your Nostr keys as well. If logged in with your Socials or email, you’ll have to deposit sats into your Wavlake account before zapping musicians. But in the case of Nostr, you can zap them directly from your Lightning wallet.

2. Stacker News- Earn Bitcoin by participating in discussions

Stacker-news

Website: https://stacker.news/

Stacker News is a reddit-style web forum that has heavily integrated the Lightning Network into its platform. It’s similar to Reddit except that readers will zap sats to posters instead of upvoting. They provide each user with a unique LN Address to which zapped sats will be sent to.

There are two ways of zapping:

1. Zap from your account by first depositing some sats into the provided LN Address

2. Zap from your own Lightning wallet by long-pressing the bolt icon and choosing the zap amount

You can sign up and log in with LNURL, Nostr or e-mail. They also recently added the ability to cross-post on Nostr as well.

3. Fountain - Earn Bitcoin by creating cool podcasts

Fountain

Website: https://fountain.fm/

Fountain is an audio-publishing platform that resembles traditional platforms with a deep integration of the Lightning Network. It rewards both listeners and publishers.

It offers features like earning for listening, creating and sharing clips, and supporting favourite shows by sending creators sats over the Lightning Network.

But unlike Wavlake and Stacker News, Fountain only lets you log in using your email ID and not with your socials or Nostr. This means that you have to deposit sats into the Lightning Wallet associated with your Fountain account first.

However, they provide users with the ability to ‘stream’ sats to publishers by defining a custom amount that will be sent for every minute or ten seconds that the track or podcast is listened to. You can also import your existing library from Spotify or from other apps that support the OPML format.

4. Mash - Earn Bitcoin by writing good articles

Mast

Website: https://mash.com/

Mash is a suite of monetisation tools built using the Lightning Network that you can integrate into your website.

It’s an all-in-one tool built using the Lightning Network that can be integrated into any of your websites, be it for personal or for business use. You can use their tools to paywall your content, accept sats from users as donations and set up custom UI components for each of these actions. You can also set up a custom page you can redirect your audience to for donations.

They have an SDK which is a library that can be used to interact with their consumer wallet. You can use it to charge for actions like visiting a page, scrolling to a certain point, clicking a button, or the amount of time spent engaging with a particular piece of content.

You can look through the full list of features that they offer here.

5. Vida - Earn Bitcoin by participating in live streams

Vida is live-streaming platform that, as their website description declares, have everything you need to get paid to go live.

Vida lets you forward streams to other social media platforms, set up paid direct messages, 1:1 meeting rooms, sponsored streams and split earnings with other collaborators. You can create Vida accounts using your phone number, email ID or Nostr keys. You can make payments by depositing sats into their integrated LN wallet or through your own wallet.

6. Breez - Earn Bitcoin by creating cool podcasts

Breez - logo

Website: https://breez.technology/

Breez is a self-custodial Lightning wallet that was one of the first to implement a zap-based media platform with their integrated podcasting app.

Each user’s wallet instance will have an associated account on the integrated platform and users can boost and stream sats directly to publishers from their own self-custodial wallet on Breez. As is the case with other podcasting 2.0 apps, listeners can also send boostagrams with attached messages to publishers.

7. Nostr - Earn Bitcoin for posting amazing content

Nostr Bitcoin

Website: https://github.com/nostr-protocol

Nostr is a decentralised social media protocol that democratises content hosting in a big way. It has made it possible to build media platforms on top of a common protocol, with users being able to interact with each other even if they use different platforms. Most of these platforms have integrated lightning into them, enabling users to zap each other for the content they put out. Nostr has an ecosystem of its own with ‘clients’ like Amethyst, Plebstr, Snort, Iris, Damus, Habla, zap.stream.

It’s a completely new paradigm when it comes to media platforms, as users’ networks are not restricted to one particular ‘client’ or platform. For example, if you use Plebstr, you can interact with people who use Amethyst and see the posts published on it, as both these apps use Nostr as a protocol to send, receive and display content to its users.

The term ‘Zaps’ started picking up steam because of Nostr. The protocol is still quite early in terms of development but it has a lot of potential to become a truly global, decentralised borderless and censorship-resistant alternative to existing content and media platforms. You can get started by any one of the clients from this list.

While these are exciting developments in the Lightning ecosystem as a whole, these platforms (and protocol) are far from being ‘mainstream’ in terms of their usage and relevance outside the Bitcoin community. Bitcoin itself is in a bear market and that has an impact on the amount of traction and growth that these apps can experience at the moment. But based on using them over the course of the last few weeks, its hard to deny the fact that they can onboard a lot of people on to the Bitcoin network and completely revolutionise how content is valued on the internet.
