Understanding Node ID’s

Node ID refers to a unique identifier assigned to each participant’s node within the network. This identifier is a cryptographic hash of the node’s public key and serves as an address for routing payments.

When you set up your Lightning node, it generates a public-private key pair. The public key is used to create your node ID, ensuring that it’s unique and verifiable on the network. This ID plays a critical role in the routing process. When someone initiates a payment, the Lightning Network uses node IDs to determine the optimal path for the payment to travel through various connected nodes until it reaches its destination.
